How to use it

Three steps, about a minute

  1. Step 1

Count Furnished rooms (incl. living areas), such as bedrooms, the living room, dining room and a furnished office.

  2. Step 2

Leave Pounds per room at 1,000 or adjust it for homes that are lightly or heavily furnished.

  3. Step 3

Read the Estimated weight, the Estimated volume in cubic feet and the Suggested truck size.

How the moving weight calculator works

Estimated weight = furnished rooms x pounds per room. Estimated volume = weight divided by 7, because packed household goods run about 7 lb per cubic foot as a rule of thumb. The truck suggestion follows the volume: up to 400 cu ft, a 10-12 ft truck; up to 800, a 15-16 ft truck; up to 1,100, a 20 ft truck; up to 1,700, a 26 ft truck; beyond that, a second trip or vehicle. The defaults use 5 rooms at 1,000 lb each (another rule of thumb) for 5,000 lb, about 714 cu ft and a 15-16 ft truck. Garages, basements, pianos and gym equipment can throw this off. Long-distance moves are often billed on actual scale weight, so do an in-home or video survey before giving a binding price.

Pro tips

Using the numbers like a pro: tips for moving companies

Tip 01

Ask about the garage, attic, basement and shed on every phone estimate. Those spaces rarely count as rooms but can add serious weight, and they are where quick quotes tend to fall short.

Tip 02

Use the room count for a first number, then confirm with a video or in-home survey before booking a large or long-distance move. A firm price built on a guess can leave your crew working hours you never billed.

Tip 03

Quote packing, specialty items like pianos or safes, and long carries or extra stairs as separate lines. Customers can compare offers fairly, and you get paid for the work that slows a crew down.

Turn it into leads

Put a calculator like this on your own website

People planning a move start by wondering how big it is. A move size estimator on your website gives them weight and truck size in seconds, then asks for the move date, origin, destination and a phone number to send a full quote. Your sales team gets a lead with the date and route already filled in. Our team can connect a version like this to your office inbox or CRM.

FAQ

Moving Weight Calculator questions

How do I estimate the weight of my household goods?

A common rule of thumb is about 1,000 pounds per furnished room, counting bedrooms, living areas and dining rooms. Multiply your room count by 1,000 for a starting point, then add for a packed garage, basement, piano or heavy furniture. A mover's in-home or video survey gives a much closer figure than any formula.

What size moving truck do I need?

Estimate the volume first. Packed household goods run roughly 7 pounds per cubic foot as a rule of thumb, so divide the estimated weight by 7. As a rough guide, up to about 400 cubic feet fits a 10-12 foot truck, up to 800 a 15-16 foot truck, up to 1,100 a 20 foot truck and up to 1,700 a 26 foot truck.

Are long-distance moves priced by weight?

Interstate household moves are commonly priced by weight and distance, plus charges for packing and other services. The truck is weighed on a certified scale empty and again when loaded. A binding estimate locks the price based on the surveyed inventory, while a non-binding one can change with the actual weight. Ask which type you are getting.
