Three steps, about a minute
Step 1
Measure each bed, add up the square footage and enter the total as Bed area.
Step 2
Set the Depth in inches; 2 to 3 inches suits most mulch beds.
Step 3
Order by Cubic yards for bulk delivery, or use the 2 cu ft bags count.
How the mulch calculator works
Bed area × depth gives volume. Depth is entered in inches, so the tool divides by 12 to get cubic feet and then by 27 to get cubic yards. Bags assume the common 2 cubic foot size and are rounded up to whole bags. For the default 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep, that comes to 125 cubic feet, about 4.63 cubic yards, or 63 bags. Most beds use 2-3 inches of mulch, and the same area × depth math works for topsoil, compost or decorative stone. No waste or settling allowance is added, so round up a little for fluffy material or uneven beds. Break curved beds into rectangles and circles to measure them. On existing beds, subtract the mulch already in place from the depth you plan to add.
| Bed area | 500 sq ft |
|---|---|
| Depth | 3 in |
| Cubic yards | 4.63 |
|---|---|
| 2 cu ft bags | 63 |
| Cubic feet | 125 |
Area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27. Most beds use 2–3 inches of mulch.
Using the numbers like a pro: tips for landscapers
Price bulk mulch installs by the yard, delivered and spread. Customers see a clear unit price, and edging, weeding and bed cleanup can go on the quote as separate lines.
Keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and siding. Piling it against bark or walls holds moisture where it causes damage, and explaining that shows customers you know the craft.
Sell yearly mulch refreshes as a recurring service. Save each property's bed area and depth, and next spring's quote is ready before you even call.
Put a calculator like this on your own website
Spring brings homeowners searching for how much mulch to buy. A calculator on your site answers that, then offers delivery and installation through a short quote form. Some visitors will still buy bags, but the ones who see 63 bags and picture hauling them are your leads. Add your service area and a photo gallery of finished beds next to it.

Mulch Calculator questions
How much mulch do I need for 100 square feet?
At 3 inches deep, 100 sq ft needs 25 cubic feet, about 0.93 cubic yards, or 13 bags of 2 cubic feet. At 2 inches deep, it needs about 16.7 cubic feet, roughly 0.62 cubic yards or 9 bags. Round up a little for settling.
How many bags of mulch are in a yard?
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 13.5 bags of 2 cubic feet each, or 14 when you round up. Bulk delivery by the yard is common on bigger jobs, while bags are easier for small beds or spots a truck can't reach.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is the usual depth for garden beds. Thinner layers let weeds through, and much deeper layers can keep soil too wet and starve roots of air. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems so the bark stays dry.
