Flooring Calculator
Flooring is sold by the box, not the square foot. Add a waste allowance to the room area and this tool rounds up to full cartons and prices them, for installers quoting jobs and homeowners checking a store estimate.

Three steps, about a minute
Step 1
Enter the Room area in square feet, including closets that get the same floor.
Step 2
Set the Waste factor, then the Coverage per box printed on the carton.
Step 3
Add the Material price per sq ft to see Boxes to order and Material cost.
How the flooring calculator works
Room area × (1 + waste percent) is the area to cover, spare pieces included. That number ÷ coverage per box, rounded up, is the box count, because suppliers sell full cartons. Material cost is boxes × coverage per box × price per sq ft, so it reflects every square foot you actually pay for, not just what goes on the floor. A 500 sq ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft boxes at $3.50 needs 550 sq ft of coverage, which is 28 boxes and $1,960 of flooring. Plan 5-10% waste for straight lays and more for diagonal or patterned installs. Underlayment, transitions, trim and labor are not in the total. Measure each room at its widest points, and check subfloor flatness and moisture before ordering hardwood or laminate.

Using the numbers like a pro: tips for flooring contractors
Quote material from full boxes, not square feet. The gap between 550 sq ft needed and 560 sq ft bought looks small on one job but adds up over a season.
Ask customers to keep one unopened box after the install. Products get discontinued, and a matching box turns a future water-damage repair into a quick plank swap.
Schedule delivery early enough for acclimation when the manufacturer calls for it, and put that step in the written quote. Customers accept the wait when they know why it's there.
Put a calculator like this on your own website
A flooring calculator gives shoppers a box count and a material number, but what they really want is an installed price. Offer to send one, labor included, in exchange for an email and phone number, and follow up the same day. Add a photo upload so they can show the current floor. We can tailor one to show your own product lines and install options.

Flooring Calculator questions
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Multiply your room area by 1.10 for 10% waste, divide by the square feet in one box, and round up. A 500 sq ft room with 20 sq ft boxes needs 550 sq ft, which is 27.5 boxes, so you order 28. Diagonal and patterned layouts call for a bigger waste factor.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
A common rule of thumb is 5-10% extra for straight installs and more for diagonal, herringbone or rooms with lots of angles and closets. The extra covers cutting waste and damaged pieces, and an unopened leftover box comes in handy for future repairs.
How do I measure a room for flooring?
Measure length and width in feet at the widest points and multiply for square footage. Break L-shaped or irregular rooms into rectangles, figure each one, and add them together. Include closets and spaces under appliances that will get the new floor, then add waste.
