Choose the Project from the list, ranging from a garage cleanout up to new construction or demolition.

  2. Step 2

Change Pickup truck loads you'd compare to if one pickup load holds more or less than 2.5 cubic yards.

  3. Step 3

Read the Recommended size and About this many pickup loads to explain the choice to customers.

How the dumpster size calculator works

Each project in the list maps to a starting size: 10 yards for a garage or basement cleanout, 15 for a kitchen or bathroom remodel, 20 for a roof tear-off on an average home, 30 for a whole-home or estate cleanout and 40 for new construction or large demolition. The pickup comparison divides the dumpster's cubic yards by the volume of one pickup load, 2.5 cubic yards by default, rounded to a whole number. A 10-yard dumpster works out to about 4 pickup loads. These are typical starting points, not a measurement of the job. Weight matters as much as volume: concrete, dirt, brick and shingles hit weight limits long before the container looks full, so check the tonnage allowance and material restrictions before booking.

Pro tips

Using the numbers like a pro: tips for dumpster rental companies

Tip 01

When a caller is between two sizes, lay out the price of the larger container next to the cost of a swap or second haul. Showing both options builds trust and avoids an angry call mid-project.

Tip 02

Post the weight allowance and overage rate for each size on your website and in the rental agreement. Roofing and concrete jobs are where surprise overage charges tend to show up.

Tip 03

Ask what is going in the dumpster, not just the project type. Shingles, dirt and concrete may call for a smaller container or a clean-load rate to stay within road weight limits.

Turn it into leads

Put a calculator like this on your own website

Most callers have no idea what a cubic yard looks like, so they phone around asking which size to get. A size helper on your website answers that first, then shows a 'check availability' form for their address and dates. Leads come in with the size, location and timing already filled in, which shortens every booking call.

FAQ

Dumpster Size Calculator questions

What size dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?

A 15-yard dumpster is a common starting point for a kitchen or bathroom remodel. Go larger if you are removing several rooms of flooring, drywall or cabinets, or clearing out other areas at the same time. Tile, plaster and other heavy debris can hit the weight allowance quickly, so ask about tonnage limits.

How many pickup truck loads fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

If a pickup load is about 2.5 cubic yards, a 20-yard dumpster holds roughly 8 pickup loads. Pickup beds vary in size, and how high you pile changes the number, so treat it as a ballpark. The comparison helps when deciding between hauling debris yourself and renting a container.

Can you put concrete or dirt in a regular dumpster?

Often yes, but with limits. Concrete, dirt, brick and roofing shingles are very heavy, so rental companies may require a smaller dumpster, a load of only that material, or a lower fill line. Overweight containers can bring extra fees or be refused for pickup. Always tell the rental company what you plan to throw away.
