Roof Squares Calculator
Turn a house footprint and roof pitch into surface area, roofing squares, shingle bundles and a job value at your own price per square. Roofers use it for quick phone quotes; homeowners use it to sanity-check a bid.

Three steps, about a minute
Step 1
Enter the House footprint incl. overhangs in square feet, taken from plans, a tape or aerial imagery.
Step 2
Select the Roof pitch, choosing Flat / low slope for roofs with almost no rise.
Step 3
Adjust the Waste factor and Your price per square to see squares, bundles and job value.
How the roof squares calculator works
The calculator multiplies the flat footprint by a slope factor equal to the square root of 1 + (rise ÷ 12)², which gives 1.118 for a 6/12 roof and 1.414 for a 12/12. That surface area ÷ 100 equals roofing squares, because one square covers 100 sq ft. Your waste percentage is added next, and bundles are squares × 3, rounded up, the usual packaging for asphalt shingles (some heavier lines pack differently, so check the wrapper). Job value is squares with waste × your price per square. Plug in the defaults of 2,000 sq ft, 6/12, 10% waste and $450, and you get 2,236 sq ft of roof, about 24.6 squares, 74 bundles and roughly $11,068. One pitch is assumed for the whole roof. Valleys, dormers and mixed pitches call for an on-site or aerial measurement before you sign.
| House footprint incl. overhangs | 2,000 sq ft |
|---|---|
| Roof pitch | 6/12 |
| Waste factor | 10% |
| Your price per square | $450 |
| Roof surface area | 2,236 sq ft |
|---|---|
| Squares with waste | 24.6 |
| Shingle bundles (3 per square) | 74 |
| Estimated job value | $11,068 |
Pitch multipliers are the true slope factors (√(1+(rise/12)²)). Always confirm with an on-site measurement.
Using the numbers like a pro: tips for roofers
Bump the Waste factor on hip roofs and cut-up roofs with several valleys. More cuts mean more scrap, and running short mid-job costs a supply run and crew hours.
Build tear-off, underlayment, flashing, vents, labor and margin into your price per square. Keep decking replacement as a per-sheet line item so rotten wood found later doesn't eat your profit.
Give a range from the footprint number on the first call, then a firm price after you've measured on site. Homeowners accept that sequence when you explain it up front.
Put a calculator like this on your own website
A homeowner checking roof size online is usually pricing a replacement. Put a calculator like this on your roofing page, show the square count right away, and offer a detailed price range by text or email in return for a name, phone and address. Each submission arrives with the house size filled in, so your first call is already a quote conversation. We can set one up that drops each request into your CRM.

Roof Squares Calculator questions
How many squares is a 2,000 square foot roof?
That depends on whether 2,000 sq ft is the roof surface or the house footprint. A 2,000 sq ft roof surface is 20 squares, since one square is 100 sq ft. A 2,000 sq ft footprint under a 6/12 pitch works out to about 22.4 squares before waste, or about 24.6 with 10% added.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Most asphalt shingles are packaged three bundles to a square, so one bundle covers about 33.3 sq ft. Some heavier architectural and designer shingles take four or five bundles per square. Check the coverage printed on the wrapper before ordering, and buy ridge cap and starter separately if the product line calls for it.
What is a roof pitch multiplier?
It converts flat footprint area into actual sloped roof area. The multiplier equals the square root of 1 plus (rise ÷ 12) squared. A 4/12 roof uses about 1.054, a 6/12 uses 1.118, an 8/12 uses 1.202 and a 12/12 uses 1.414. Multiply the footprint by the factor to get the area you will shingle.
